Key Recommendations
An objective of this plan is to provide a summary of strategies and policies that will guide the Faith Harding Administration first 100 days in government and represents a commitment to follow through on the matters presented herein. WIC developed a number of recommendations. Of these the following were selected for implementation during the first 100 days of a Faith Harding Government.
Attraction
Create a “buzz” about jobs in Guyana by targeting varied audiences: youth, parents, working adults, dislocated workers, underpaid workers, and unemployed workers.
- Work with government, community and industry leaders to identify, recruit and train 20 younger workers to serve as speakers to students, employers, employees and the unemployed about opportunities in the various sectors of Guyana’s economy.
- Create “One-Stop Workforce Centers” to assist emerging workers, career changers, parents, and career advisors with easy public access throughout the 10 regions of Guyana.
- Work with industry partners to develop additional information about workforce development resources.
Pipeline Development
Increase the number of schools using Career and Technology Development Programs, and provide information and materials about opportunities in the various sectors of our economy.
Training
Identify and develop short-term training courses that are aligned with the needs of the new Guyana economy, and that will prepare workers for the emerging jobs.
Data Driven Policy Development
Institute nationwide data collection and analysis to help focus training resources: to track individuals from pre-apprenticeship to apprenticeship and from two-year to four-year higher education training; and to assist business incubators with development and growth of small businesses.
Call for Action
Businesses in Guyana recognize the challenges of attracting, training and retaining talent. Through various sector strategy initiatives, a wide range of strategies will be developed to address these challenges. In a world of limited resources, it is important to focus on a few critical and actionable areas for immediate implementation.
